At just five hours old, our first child was transferred to McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, where he joined dozens of other babies requiring special care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
We're grateful for the top-notch, compassionate care provided to our son - and, by extension, to us (the delirious, stressed, first-time parents of an ill newborn).
During those weeks, when we couldn't be by our son's side, we'd phone the unit to check on him. At the end of one such conversation, the nurse assured me our son was comfortable. "Get some sleep," she said kindly. "I'll tell him you called."
Today, that baby is a healthy 12-year-old, but we won't forget his perilous beginning, nor the reality that so many other families are enduring the heartache of having a sick child.
I chose to name this collection of photos "Bloom" in honour of those working to ensure that our "seedlings" have the best opportunity to flower.
