“At This Point in Time" is a series of photographs made during a memorable experience as one of six artists in residence at Point Pelee National Park, Ontario, in June, 2023.
Special thanks to Park staff, organizers, and participants of the Artist in Residence program for generously providing me with space and time to learn about the cultural and natural history of the area, connect with my fellow artists, and immerse myself in the beauty of the park.
Point Pelee Cyanotypes
WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE?
Cyanotypes are prints created by coating a surface with a solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide (iron salts). When exposed to UV light, then rinsed with water, the treated portion of the surface turns a distinctive blue. The process has been in use since the 1840s, and allows for many creative opportunities - even in the digital age.
HOW WERE THESE PRINTS CREATED?
I made many photographs during my experience as an Artist in Residence at Point Pelee National Park in 2023. To make the prints you see here, I created digital negatives of my photos using photo editing software, printed them onto transparencies, then placed the individual transparencies atop the treated acid-free art paper prior to exposing the sheets to UV light. The dark areas of the transparency blocked the light from reacting with the treated paper. When rinsed, those portions of the paper remained white, while the exposed areas of the prints turned blue.
THE FINISHED PRODUCT
The results are one-of-a-kind, monochrome versions of the photographs I made at Point Pelee in 2023.
I’m drawn to the cool blues and the organic, aged feel of the images. The Park is a special place for many reasons, and my experiences here continue to inform my artistic practice and development.
